Volleyball takes 3-2 loss in Friday night frights thriller

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (3-1) dropped a 3-2 thriller at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (3-1) a Full Life Center on Friday.

History will say it is hard to win in Waxahachie. In an all-time series where Lady Rams lead 17-8, five of those eight losses have been at SAGU.

Neither team hit particularly well, with the Lady Rams hitting narrowly higher at .190 to SAGU's .185. The Lions were out blocked and committed more total turnovers than the TXWES, but were +10 in kills.

Seven players scored double-digits in kills. Four for SAGU and three (Bailey Foy, Sydney Charlton, Veronika Webb) for Texas Wesleyan.

The Lions pulled away in set one with 7-2 run that established an edge with a slew of back line precision kills they would carry to a 25-22 win.

The Lions stepped off the gas in the second set, and the Rams pounced. The set was tied at 9 before Charlton broke the tie and spurred TXWES on an 11-4 run for a commanding 20-13 lead. The Lady Rams nursed the lead until Morgan Burns connected with Foy to even the match at one win apiece.

SAGU returned the favor in set three, building an 18-13 lead by getting kills from four different players. The Lady Rams clawed back, led by Charlton and Webb, who put down a smash to get within one point at 24-23. The Lions were able to convert set point however, putting the Rams on the ropes, down 2-1.

Texas Wesleyan led throughout the fourth set, establishing a healthy edge after nine attacking errors by the home team. The Lions came back to tie the set at 16, but the Rams outscored their opponent 9-5 to force a fifth set, capped by another Charlton kill.

Charlton hit .359 and posted a career-high 17 kills. Haley Harvey earned a career-high 15 digs. Burns notched a double-double behind 28 assists and 14 digs. Foy hit .306 with 15 kills, while Webb tallied .300 with 12 kills.

Up next for the Lady Rams, a home match with Central Christian College on Friday, November 6. The contest is set for a 7 p.m.
