TXWES VB rips Tigers in sweep

Lady Rams make quick work of Central Christian; Morgan Burns (pictured) led all players with 14 assists

FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas Wesleyan University volleyball (4-1) bounced back from their only setback of the season by breezing to a straight set sweep, 25-14, 25-5 and 25-8, over Central Christian (2-12) on Friday at the Sid Richardson Arena. The match was 59 minutes in length.

Third year Head Coach Jessica Ransom played all 16 Lady Rams, with seven players seeing action during all three games. Their mastery continued against the team from McPherson, Ks, winning six-in-a-row, all by 3-0 verdicts since 2017.

Texas Wesleyan hit for a blistering .459 percentage, converting 61 swings into 35 kills against a mere 7 errors. In contrast, Central had 54 attacks and 15 kills, which were negated by 15 errors. The Tigers .000 hitting percentage revealed their inability to find much offensive rhythm. Contributing factors were their struggles receiving serves, which resulted in few quality hits at the net, not to mention Wesleyan's strong presence on the front line.

The Rams, who were 26-10 last year, including a 17-3 mark in the Sooner Athletic Conference, were on their game from the outset. Once they got past the first game, they made just one error in hammering CCC over the next two.

Freshman Nyia Anderson and Bailey Foy, a senior, led the hosts with a fury of powerfully applied kills. Anderson racked up 11 in 19 attempts, making just three miscues for a .421 percentage. Foy had 9 attacks, 7 kills and a lone error to finish at .667. It was the third time in four matches she committed just one error.

Three hitters contributed error-free performances; senior Veronika Webb, and sophomores Sydney Charlton and McKayla Flowers. Webb had kills in 6-of-10 attacks (.600), while Charlton was credited for 5-in-6 (.833) and Flowers turned in 4-of-7 (.571). It was a show in depth.

Setting the table for the offensive assault were seven different players credited with at least one assist. Senior Morgan Burns and freshman Emily Brooks paced the team with 14 and 9 respectively.

TXWES pounded nine serving aces, topped by three from Brooks. Hannah Bokal, a junior, and sophomore Haley Harvey each had two.

Defensively, junior Ashley Curry and senior Gabriella Gracia-Badillo had five and four digs apiece. Three players had multiple blocked shots. Foy led with two of the solo variety. Webb made three assisted blocks, with Anderson getting two.

The Lady Rams return to the court on Nov. 13 in a road match at Chickasha, Ok against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Due to an abbreviated schedule related to Covid-19, their next action is slated for March in 2021.

For the current season, Texas Wesleyan's Top 5 in kills includes Foy with 41, Anderson at 35, Charlton 34, Webb with 30, and sophomore Arianna Alvarado at 29.
