GOODWELL, OK - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (13-6, 8-4 SAC) outscored Oklahoma Panhandle State (5-16, 0-12 SAC) in every quarter Saturday afternoon in an 81-54 rout.
Freshman post
Makayla Coy terrorized the Aggies inside, with 19 points and a whopping 16 rebounds on 8-of-9 shooting. Coy's previous high on the glass was nine when she came close to a double-double with 17 additional points at home against Wayland Baptist. Her rebounds led to a 44-25 advantage on the boards for TXWES. She had seven of the team's 14 offensive rebounds, which helped the Lady Rams to a 17-2 edge in second-chance points in a runaway.
She wasn't the only one crashing the boards off of OPSU's 38 percent shooting day, including a 29 percent third-quarter in which the Aggies were out-scored 21-13.
Nicole Gleason,
Chrystal Ngawuchu and
Evie Whorley all collected eight boards - Ngawuchu did it in just 17 minutes.
Destiney Winkfield dished out eight of the team's 18 assists.
Whorley scoed a season high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Gleason added 16 to Winkfield's 13.Â
A drought in the second quarter allowed Texas Wesleyan to pull ahead. Up 29-23 with 6:02 remaining in the first half, the Lady Rams went on a 8-0 run before the Aggies managed their next basket with 85 seconds left before the pause in action.Â
The victory improved the Rams to 8-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, just past the halfway point of the conference season, now back in a virtual tie with Mid-America Christian and University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma for the third spot in the conference behind national championship contenders No. 1 Oklahoma City and the No. 5 Flying Queens of WBU.
It was a sloppy affair. The two sides combined for 46 turnovers - 25 of which were the Aggies' undoing. The Lady Rams beat up OPSU in points off turnovers 27-16 but bruised the Aggies worse inside with a 54-26 advantage in points in the paint.
Judgment week is coming for women's basketball. TXWES will host OSU on February 8 and USAO on February 13 before traveling to face the Evangels of MACUÂ February 15 before a slew of more winnable contests down the stretch. With Coy finding a rhythm - she's started in six-consecutive games, averaging just over nine points and six boards a game - Texas Wesleyan is finding new ways to win in 2020.
Southwestern Christian is up first to finish up a three-game road trip, Thursday February 6. TXWES won the first matchup in a shootout, 82-77. The 159 points combined were the second highest in a win this season.
