FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (16-10, 11-8 SAC) is getting hot at the right time of the year, grabbing its third-straight win Tuesday night at the Sid Richardson Center, this time over Southwestern Assemblies of God (12-14, 7-12 SAC) 85-76.
The light bulbs lit up for the offense in the third quarter, finding easy lay-ups and more opportunities at the line to the tune of 33 points. The Lady Rams scored 34 points in the third quarter last week in a 91-73 victory over Langston.
The second half was a complete shift from the first half, when SAGU seemed to get every difficult shot to fall. The Lions made four shots while getting fouled in the first 20 minutes and hit 11-of-19 shots to start the game. The rivals from Waxahachie led by 12 at the half despite the team's leading scorer, Lexi Rich, hitting on just one bucket for a couple of points. Things only got more frustrating for Rich when the team needed her consistent scoring down the stretch. She was whistled for a technical foul and only hit on one other bucket, finishing the game with four points on 2-of-15 shooting, her lowest scoring output in two years.Â
After Rich scored 48 points in two meetings in 2019, this Lady Rams squad held Rich to 19 points on 6-of-30 shooting this campaign.
TXWES outscored SAGU's bench a whopping 32-4. 13 points and seven rebounds came from
Makayla Coy and
Alexus Brigham came out firing from the jump with 12 points on 5-of-8 hoists.
Nicole Gleason had 16 points and nine rebounds with season highs in free throws made (7) and attempted (8).
Destiney Winkfield dished out six assists with 13 points and pulled off a signature for her this season - figuratively breaking ankles of opponents while running out the clock.
Evie Whorley added 12 points and six rebounds, but her defensive presence was far more important guarding Rich. Whorley played every minute of the game as did two Lions including Alexis Casher, who did not get near enough opportunities in her 40 minutes of work on 6-of-6 shooting. It was Whorley's first 40-minute effort of her career.
The victory marks the first season sweep of SAGU since the 2016-17 run and puts TXWES one step closer to avoiding top-five teams Oklahoma City and Wayland Baptist in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament next week. John Brown comes to town Thursday for Senior Night one game ahead of the Lady Rams, but Texas Wesleyan has a chance to sweep and leap into the No. 6 spot on the final night of the regular season. Tip-off will be at 6 p.m.
