FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (17-10, 12-8 SAC) scored 34 points in the third quarter in a win over Langston and 33 points Tuesday in a victory over Southwest Assemblies of God. Thursday night at the Sid Richardson Center, the Lady Rams did not disappoint, putting on a show out of the halftime break - dumping 31 points on the John Brown Golden Eagles (9-19, 5-14 SAC) in a 87-72 victory.
The triumph keeps hopes alive that the Lady Rams can snag a Sooner Athletic Conference quarterfinal game at home for the seniors who, led by
Nicole Gleason, owned the narrative throughout the night.
Gleason scored 28 points, harassed JBU with eight steals, hauled in six rebounds and dished out five assists. It was the first time in her career she has had a 20-5-5-5 stat line. She scored the first five points of the game for TXWES and never looked back.
Senior
Jordan Brightwell notched 15 points and nine rebounds and senior
Destiney Winkfield scored 17 points and hit three rainbows from beyond the arc. Senior
Darby Pugh also got the start and played 22 minutes, one off a career high. Freshman
Makayla Coy got the start inside and contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.Â
In the last three third quarters, Texas Wesleyan has shot 39-of-60, or 65 percent, from the floor - a remarkable number. When the Lady Rams got on offensive firework shows like Thursday night's, the team is as good as any foe. Through three quarters Thursday, TXWES turned the ball over just once, scoring 19 points off the first 10 turnovers by JBU in the game, basically turning every turnover into a bucket on the other end. Texas Wesleyan led by as much as 30, 63-33.
The regular season for TXWES is over and now the Lady Rams will await their seeding for the tournament. Mid-America Christian and Southwestern Christian are 11-8 in the SAC, a half game behind Texas Wesleyan's 12-8 finish. TXWES split with both Mid-America Christian and Southwestern Christian this season and the Evangels and Eagles also split.Â
In the event of a three-way tie, both Southwestern Christian and Mid-America Christian have a win over the third-place team University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma and would have rights to the No. 4 seed and to host the quarterfinal. The Rams were swept by the top three teams in the conference, meaning the Lady Rams would host a playoff game only if Southwestern Christian drops its contest with No. 5 Wayland Baptist and MACU slips up at Langston on Saturday.
The most likely scenario will see the Lady Rams as the No. 5 seed, traveling to Oklahoma City for a rematch against the Evangels in the 4-5 game. The quarterfinals will take place Tuesday March 3.
