Softball comes up empty handed at Tourney on the Beach

PORTLAND, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (0-5) were turned away empty handed in day two of the NAIA Tournament on the Beach on Saturday. The Lady Rams fell short 4-1 against No. 16 Columbia College (6-0) before getting edged 3-2 by McPherson College (3-2).

TXWES was outpaced by the Cougars in game one. Columbia grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the third. Payton Davidson launched a double to plate Chyann Jarret and put a run on the board in the bottom half of the third inning. The Cougars added an insurance run in the fifth and that sealed the game.

Davidson went 1 for 3 with the lone RBI for Texas Wesleyan.

In game two, the team had the rug pulled out in a game that slipped away in the late goings. TXWES grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth after a slurry of singles loaded the bases. An error allowed two runs to score to give the Lady Rams a lead. It was preserved until a Bulldog sacrifice fly tied the game and Destiny Bacon base hit plated the go-ahead run. That score held, spelling a sour end to the weekend.

Jenna Rhoades added two more hits to her ledger in loss.

The team will head to Alexandria, La. To take part in the LSUA Softball Invitational starting on Fri., Feb. 14. The Lady Rams play Texas A&M – Texarkana in a double header starting at 1:30 p.m. before taking on William Carey at 7:30 p.m.
