WBB: Lady Rams hold off OPSU in first win of 20-21

Makayla Coy earned her fifth career double double, pouring in 25 points and collecting 10 rebounds in the first win of the season for TXWES.

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball team (1-2, 1-1 SAC) collected its first win of the season, holding off Oklahoma Panhandle State University (0-2, 0-2 SAC) 62-56 at the Sid Richardson Center on Monday night.

Makayla Coy earned her fifth career double double, pouring in 25 points and collecting 10 rebounds in the first win of the season for TXWES.

"I'm just happy to do whatever I can to help the team get a win," commented Coy on her performance. "It was a total team effort tonight. I think if we continue to rebound and defend, it gives us a chance to win."

The Lady Rams were a force in the paint, outscoring the Aggies 24-18 and finishing plus-9 in rebounding. TXWES held its opponent to 36% from the floor, while hitting 23 of 52 (42%) from the floor.

It was a defensive struggle early as the Lady Rams and Aggies were slow to get anything going on the offensive end. TXWES was able to turn a 6-4 deficit into a 13-11 lead in a rather uneventful opening frame.

Slim margins was the name of the game throughout the contest, as neither team held a very firm grasp on the lead. The Lady Rams stacked a nine point advantage late in the third quarter, but that was quickly erased by the Aggies with an 11-2 rally. Cassia McKaskill was largely responsible for the impressive run, hitting a pair of three-pointers and dropping in free throws to get the Aggies back in it.

The Lady Rams never really found an answer for McCaskill, as she led all players with 30 points. She gave OPSU the lead to start the final quarter, but Makayla Coy answered with a driving layup in the paint, an area the sophomore dominated most of the night.

The Aggies knotted things up again at 48-48 with 8:13 remaining in regulation on another triple, but again Coy answered with four consecutive points, the latter on a second chance effort off an OPSU turnover. The Aggies found themselves in foul trouble and the Lady Rams kept forcing the issue inside with great success.

OPSU got within two at 58-56 with 48 seconds remaining, but TXWES had the formula on the offensive end to see the game out and capture a 62-56 win.

Alexus Brigham dropped in 11 points, adding four assists and three steals in the effort. Evie Whorley had eight boards to go with six points, while Janee Knorr contributed seven points, six rebounds, and a pair of blocks for the Lady Rams.

Due to COVID-19 issues, John Brown has canceled the upcoming game with TXWES, set for this coming Thursday. The next game for the team would then be Thursday, January 21 at University of Science & Arts in Chickasha, Okla. That game scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.

The Lady Rams return to 'The Sid' on Saturday, January 23 when they take on Mid-America Christian. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
