First half lead swept away by Stars; Lady Rams fall 57-50

Brigham led with a career-high 19 points

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Texas Wesleyan women's basketball team (1-5, 0-4 SAC) dropped a 57-50 game to Oklahoma City (3-0, 2-0 SAC) at Abe Lemons Arena on Thursday.

TXWES outshot their opponent from the field (39% to 33%), from downtown (20% to 19%), and from the free throw line (83% to 58%). The Stars however, had six more points from the charity line by taking 13 more attempts. The Lady Rams were just -1 in rebounding, but were -8 in turnovers.

Brigham earned a career-high 19 points in the loss. Makayla Coy posted her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 boards. Whorley contributed eight points, six rebounds, and five assists in the effort.

The Lady Rams establish a 10-point at the end of an unorthodox first quarter. Shelby Salter led off the scoring with a three-pointer before OCU's Abby Selzer put in a jumper to make it as 3-2 Lady Rams lead at the 9:26 mark. And then, drought. Over five minutes ticked off the scoreboard before another shot was made by either team.

The Stars knocked down a three pointer at the 4:06 mark to restart scoring, but it was TXWES that took over for the next four minutes. The Lady Rams marched to a 10-0 rally capped by an Alexus Brigham two-pointer for a 13-5 advantage after the first quarter.

The Stars returned the favor in kind, starting quarter number two with a 9-0 run to gain a 1-point edge. Evie Whorley nailed a shot from behind the arc in the next play to keep the lead until late in the half.

OCU got a three ball to go with 2:09 to go in the half to take a 23-20 lead that the Stars would hold the rest of the game. The Lady Rams trailed by two heading into the break, 28-26.

Lindsey Thrope tied things up at 30 apiece to start the third quarter, and Evie Whorley and Brigham would do the same to keep the score knotted up three more times. Brigham put in a two-pointer on a second chance effort to make it 37-all midway through, but the Stars slowly built a 45-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Brigham would bring the Rams within four points at 48-44 with 4:10 to go in regulation, but another 9-0 run from OCU sealed the game at 57-50.

The Lady Rams will come home looking for their first conference win of the season in a meeting with Southwestern Christian University on Saturday, January 30. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
