WSOC loses 2-1 at MACU

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Texas Wesleyan Women's Soccer team could not secure their first Sooner Athletic Conference win of the season as they fell 2-1 at Mid-America Christian on Saturday.

It is the third straight loss for the Lady Rams (5-4-2, 0-3-1 SAC), who have not found the win column since Sept. 18 at Texas A&M-Texarkana. Meanwhile, MACU moves to 7-4-0 overall and 4-1-0 SAC, putting them at third in league standings behind John Brown and USAO who are 5-0 in conference play this fall.

The Evangels maintained possession early, taking four shots to TXWES' 1 before finding the back of the net on their fifth try. In the 30th minute, Senior midfielder Veronica Lopez Cordero took advantage of a Lady Ram foul to score her second goal of the season.

Ten minutes later, junior forward Cara Zwilling responded with her 8th goal of the year on a ball from freshman Vanessa Soriano.

Soriano would take the final shot of the half with 20 seconds remaining but missed wide right. At the break, MACU had limited TXWES to 3 shots while taking 6 themselves.

The second half saw more chances for TXWES who would end up taking 11 shots during the period. Two shots on goal came from All-American senior Tameir Grosvenor in her first appearance since sustaining an injury on Feb. 27 in a match against MACU. Both her attempts were saved by the Evangels' keeper.

MACU would shoot four times in the second period, connecting on their third for the goal ahead goal as Lopez Cordero struck again for the second time of the match. Of the Evangels' 6 shots on goal, 2 were saved by TXWES senior keeper Julia Villalobos.

The Evangels held the lead to keep the Lady Rams winless in the conference. TXWES will stay on the road for their next match with SAC foe Oklahoma City on Oct. 19. The Lady Rams are an even 7-7 historically against the Stars but have lost their last two matchups in shutouts to OCU.
