AUSTIN – The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 58-49 win over Huston-Tillotson University (2-5) at Mary E. Branch Gym on Tuesday.
While most may be thinking about turkey, the Lady Rams are making some history. The 6-0 start is the program's best start since 1984, when the team started 7-0.
"Starting 6-0 has been a huge blessing and I am so honored to be making history with this team," said head coach
Brenita Jackson. "I couldn't be more proud of the team's resilience, getting a win on the road in a tough environment. Our team put in the work and rose to the new standard we demand, especially defensively, and it shows. We hope to continue making history and make some noise in the conference."
The Lady Rams started on a 9-3 run capped on a
Maliah LaCour lay up just past the midway point in the opening quarter, laying the groundwork for a well-managed win. The TXWES defensive held off a second half HT rally and made enough free throws down the stretch to hold of the home team.
Zarria Carter posted a career-high 20 rebounds, matching the third-best single game rebounding effort in program history. The co-record holders for the stat are teammate
Makayla Coy and Onyesonam Nolisa with 22. Carter added 11 points in the win today.
Evie Whorley led all players with 13 points.
Na'Teiona Cole posted a season-high seven assists. LaCour pourned in nine points off the bench.
The team is now 8-1 all-time against the HT Rams.
The Lady Rams will take on Arlington Baptist at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday, Nov. 27. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
