FORT WORTH – The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (23-5, 18-2 SAC) topped John Brown University (15-17, 9-11 SAC) 3-1 in the final regular season match of 2021. The Lady Rams have now won 14 consecutive matches and enter post-season play as the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season champion.
The 1-seed Lady Rams will host 8-seed University of Science & Arts on Tuesday, Nov. 9 in the Sid Richardson Center. First serve is set for 6 p.m, and Ransom know her team is in a good position, "I am excited about post-season play. We can really use the tournament as a building block this year, instead of a must win situation. We'll find out what the opening round holds for us, but we are hoping to make a run back to Iowa. We have all the pieces to the puzzle. We have talent and depth, and I'm look forward to what we can accomplish."
The Lady Rams took advantage of a slow start by John Brown to breeze through the first two set unscathed. In fact, the team hit an astonishing .556 in set one and .400 in set two. The team fell out of rhythm in the fourth, and the Golden Eagles used it to get organized and confident on offense and win the set. The Lady Rams endured and outlasted in the fourth despite another off-kilter performance. However, the win today was overshadowed by the team winning the conference title after last night, after Oklahoma City lost a match at OPSU.
Head coach
Jessica Ransom on winning the conference championship for the first time since 2005, "The conference title is huge for this program. There have been many years of post-season play, but winning conference is tough. I am so proud of this team for their perseverance they've shown thus far. To be part of something that hasn't been done in 15 years is very exciting. [The team] earned it. They worked extremely hard for it.
I hope we enjoy it for the weekend, but the next phase starts Monday.""
The Lady Rams match the all-time single season fewest losses record at 5. The team gained the most wins (25) since 2005, also the last time the team has won a conference title. At 18-2 in conference play, the team's .900 winning percentage is the best since 2007 win the team went 10-0. The team's 18 conference wins is the most since the 2003 team went 20-2 in Red River Conference play.
Today the Lady Rams also extended the win streak and protected home court in another dominant season at The Sid. Since 2016, the team has surrendered just 12 losses, while raking in 75 wins. Since Ransom took the helm, the team is 50-5 at home.
TXWES ends the regular season earning 13.71 kills per set and a hitting percentage of .276.
Bailey Foy leads the team hitting .440 on the year, which ranks second in the nation. The 13.07 assists per set the team averages is largely due to the work of senior
Morgan Burns, who logged her fifth consecutive 40+ assists match with 47. TXWES is also averaging 1.88 blocks per set, spread over 13 players, but its Foy with 81 and
Veronika Webb with 71, who have made the biggest dent.
