OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Head Baseball Coach
Bobby Garza celebrated his 100
th coaching win on Friday with an 11-9 win over Mid-America Christian in the teams' first game of the series.
"Today was a crazy game," Garza said. "I'm proud of the guys for battling back after giving up 7 runs in the first 2 innings. Morgan (McCloud) made some adjustments after the 2nd inning and put up some zeros.
"We had some really good at-bats and started chipping away at their lead. We knew if we kept having good at-bats we could put up some runs. (Garrett) Moltzan and (Matt) Moclair did a great job coming out of the bull pen. They deserve a lot of credit. The way the team battled back made the 100th win memorable."
McCloud started the game and pitched 5.2 innings keeping MACU from scoring in the third through fifth. In that time the Rams rallied for 7 runs to tie the game, which included a
Greyson Barrett double deep down the left field line that plated two runs.
The Evangels got two runs back in the sixth on two Ram errors but were limited to one hit in the seventh. TXWES would catch that runner stealing while Moltzan retired the side on a swinging strikeout.
Barrett came up big for the Rams in the eighth, hitting a grand slam over the right field fence on a 2-2 count to put his squad up 11-9.
Matt Moclair appeared in the bottom forcing two groundouts and a strikeout swinging.
Moclair would get the save on the mound retiring the last side in order for the 11-9 Rams' victory.
Garrett Moltzan got his third win of the season.
Barrett finished the day 4 for 6 at the plate with 6 RBI and 2 runs himself.
Garza said it has been a roller coaster of a time getting to 100 wins between the 2020 season being cut short due to COVID-19, the winter storm and COVID protocols and precautions this year.
"I'm very thankful for all the players, support staff and assistant coaches (Luke Jones, Ted Wisdom,
Craig Sumbler, Jedd Fagg,
Drew Sancillo and
Kelly Shoppach) that have made my job enjoyable. Kelly deserves a lot of credit. I may be given the wins, but I share them with him."
