FORT WORTH, Texas — The Texas Wesleyan softball team split their doubleheader with Southwestern Assemblies of God, losing game one 5-2 but winning the nightcap 5-4 in an extra inning in walk-off fashion on Tuesday.
Â
Game one started with four scoreless innings before SAGU got a run in the fifth. TXWES would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of six as
Brynna Foster doubled and was later brought in by
Saeya Esparza.
Taylor Tubbs batted in another run on a single.
Â
But SAGU rallied for four runs on five hits in the top of the seventh from which the Lady Rams could not recover for the 5-2 loss.
Â
In the second game, TXWES got off to a hot start as pitcher
Taylor Tubbs struck out the first side in order. With momentum on their side, the Lady Rams got three hits for three runs. Foster hit her second double of the day and was brought home on a 2 RBI play by
Mercedes Beltran.
Ashton Davis singled home
Allie Prewitt. Davis would single home Prewitt again for the 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the third.
Â
The fourth frame saw SAGU inch within one run, but the TXWES defense stifled the Lions production on an excellent play. With runners in scoring position and one out, SAGU singled up the middle to bring in one, but a quick throw from centerfielder Esparza to catcher Prewitt got what would have been the tying run. Prewitt then threw out the runner at second to finish the frame.
Â
The Lions did manage to get the tying run in the sixth on a solo homer, and with nothing doing from either side the game entered an extra inning.
Â
With the tiebreaker rule in effect, SAGU got a runner on second to start the frame. She advanced to third on a TXWES error with runners now on the corners. The next play saw a flyout to right field, which Foster caught and threw a rocket to the catcher to get the lead runner out. The Lady Rams advanced to the bottom getting a lineout at third.
Â
TXWES started the bottom of the eighth with Foster on second. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, and SAGU decided to load the bases with two intentional walks. Tubbs would get the walk-off single through a hole in the right side for the Lady Rams 5-4 victory. She also got the win in the circle throwing all eight innings, allowing six hits, four runs, and striking out four.
Â
Prewitt ended the game hitting a team best 3 for 4. She totaled four hits on the day.
Â
TXWES is now 9-9 overall and 8-6 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. SAGU is 15-9, 11-7.
