FORT WORTH, Texas — The Texas Wesleyan Softball team completed their 4-game series with Ottawa University Arizona on Saturday, after dropping both games of the final doubleheader to finish the series 1-3 against the Spirit.
Â
The Lady Rams fell in game three 1-5 and game four 6-9.
Â
In the first game of Saturday's DH, OUAZ's Phoebe Popplewel (W, 2-3) held it down in the circle, allowing just two TXWES hits and one run while striking out 7 in six innings of work.
Â
TXWES lone run occurred in the fifth inning as pitcher
Taylor Tubbs hit an RBI single, plating
Mercedes Beltran who was in scoring position after stealing second.
Â
Tubbs (1-2) picked up the loss after pitching 6.2 innings.
Â
The Lady Rams gave up two early runs to start game two of the DH but would tie it up in the bottom of one as
Ashton Davis drilled a 2 RBI hit down the leftfield line.
Â
However, the Spirit took the lead back in the next frame plating three on three hits. In the bottom, TXWES reduced the deficit to 5-3 as
Kimani Ferguson reached on an error by the shortstop but brought home Beltran from third.
Â
OUAZ crept further away, scoring runs in all but the fourth inning to make it an 8-3 ball game by the bottom of the sixth.Â
Â
That's when the Lady Rams rallied for three runs starting with a Beltran 2 RBI single. Ferguson would repeat the scoring play from the second inning, reaching on an error by the shortstop but plating Beltran to bring the score to 9-6.
Â
The Spirit got back-to-back hits with two outs but left them stranded on good defensive work by the Lady Rams. OUAZ brought in reliver Alexandra McCutcheon who would lose the leadoff batter to
Kylie Summers on a single to short. Summers then stole second, but the next three Lady Rams went down in order as McCutcheon nabbed her second save of the year.
Â
OUAZ's Cori Turner (3-2) picked up the win pitching 6 innings allowing all 6 TXWES runs.Â
Â
Foster (L, 1-3) pitched two innings allowing three earned runs.
Â
TXWES is now 3-5 overall, and OUAZ 7-8 on the year. The Lady Rams turn to Sooner Athletic Conference play next, traveling to Central Christian College for a four-game series March 12-13 in McPherson, Kansas.
