Rams close out regular season with sweep of OPSU

GOODWELL, Okla. — For the second weekend in a row, the Texas Wesleyan Baseball team has swept a Sooner Athletic Conference series, this time taking all three games at Oklahoma Panhandle State on April 30-May 1.

The Rams capped off the series with an 8-7 victory on Saturday after beating the Aggies twice during Friday's double header, 4-3 and 6-3. Last weekend, the Rams swept Central Christian College, outscoring the Tigers 42-8 in three games.

In the 8-7 series finale win over OPSU, Joseph Barfield and Ryne Randle each recorded 3 hits apiece as the Rams out-hit the Aggies 12 to 5.

Barfield went 3-4 with 2 RBI on a double. He also stole two bases and crossed the plate two times himself. In the previous day's nightcap, he batted 2-3 with 4 RBI. In the sixth inning of that game, he hit a three-run blast over right field.

Randle had a 3-5 day, also with 2 runs. He also stole a bag in the finale. Kaden Brown rounded out the Rams with multiple hits, going 2-3.

TXWES trailed OPSU 5-3 until they rallied for five runs in the eighth inning. With two outs, TXWES strung together four consecutive hits including back-to-back doubles from Marcos Sanchez and Barfield.

OPSU switched pitchers after giving up three runs during that stretch but would give up two more on an error and single to trail 8-5.

The insurance runs would pay off as OPSU went on a late rally of their own in the bottom of the ninth. They got five men on base but would only score two of them as Marcos Sanchez held it down on the mound for the save.

Starter Stephen Roberts picked up the win after pitching the first two frames allowing one hit and 2 runs.

Max Martinez came out of the bullpen in relief to pitch 2.1 innings allowing 1 hit and 1 run while fanning five. Jaxon Ingram also came in and struck out three batters, allowing no hits and 2 runs in 2.2 innings. Matt Moclair played a part of the closing effort alongside Sanchez.

The Rams close out the regular season 27-14 overall and 15-6 in the Sooner Athletic Conference placing them as the third seed in the upcoming conference tournament. TXWES will play in the Oklahoma City side of the bracket and will face sixth seed Wayland Baptist (24-23, 8-13 SAC) on Friday, May 7 at 2:30 p.m.

USAO hosts the other side of the bracket and the teams that emerge from each bracket square off for the tournament championship 1 p.m. May 10 in Chickasha, Okla.
