VB: Lady Rams upend no.15 Westmont, split pair of 5 set thrillers at Labor Day Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BELLEVUE, Neb. – The Texas Wesleyan University Volleyball team (2-5) completed the GoSarpy.com Labor Classic presented by Sarpy County Tourism with a pair of five-set matches at Lied Activity Center on Saturday. The Lady Rams went 1-1, falling to Doane University (Neb.) (11-2) before knocking off No. 15 Westmont College (Calif.) (5-5).
 
Still not at full strength, TXWES worked a few key pieces back in the lineup yesterday in hitter Sydney Charlton and setter Morgan Burns. Charlton finished the day with 37 kills, including a career-high 21 kills in the loss to Doane, while Burns collected 63 assists and 27 digs.
 
Veronika Webb stayed consistent behind 11 blocks and 20 kills on the day.
 
Against Westmont, the two teams were locked in a classic back and forth. The third set where the Warriors won a 32-30 marathon, was tied 16 times. In the fourth set the Rams erased a six point deficit with a 10-0 rally on the way to a win to flip the momentum. The fifth set was knotted up seven times before Charlton put down the winning point.
 
Five TXWES players found double digits in digs. Gracie Harrison posted four solo blocks in the comeback win.
 
The team overcame 10 reception errors by out hitting the Warriors, .226 to .176. The Rams had one less kill than Westmont, but was +8 in attacking errors and a whopping +18 in blocking.
 
The team started off the day with Doane in a highly competitive affair. The fifth set only just slipped away as the Tigers gained 9-5 edge and outlasted the TXWES attack. The Tigers had its best set offensively in the second frame, hitting .289, while TXWES matched that in the fourth, going 15-2-45 behind .289 hitting. Haley Harvey led the team with 21 digs.
 
The Labor Day Classic, a three-day event, featured 39 matches and 20 teams. Seven of the institutions that participated are represented in the NAIA Top 25, including No. 2 Jamestown, No.11 Central Methodist and No. 15 Westmont. The Lady Rams are currently receiving votes.
 
Up next for the Lady Rams is a conference match-up at Langston on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.
