Rams resilient in 2OT Draw

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Texas Wesleyan Men's Soccer team put up a tough fight that ended in a 2-2 double overtime draw with the Southwestern College (Kan.) Moundbuilders on Monday afternoon at Martin Field.

The Rams overcame steep odds to hold the Moundbuilders to a draw, despite a red card in the seventh minute which left them a man down for the rest of the match.

"I'm extremely proud of the boys for the way they battled," said head coach Cole Sweetser. "The way they played with ten men for the majority of the game was phenomenal. It was great to see them come together and leave it all on the field for each other. I think today's game really showed them what they're capable of."

The Rams were down early as the Moundbuilders scored both goals within the first eight minutes. The second goal was scored just a minute after the red card that removed freshman Osvaldo Lopez from play.

The Rams pressed on, getting a goal back in the 27th minute by freshman Mateja Jovanovic as they headed into the half down 2-1.

The TXWES defense held strong, not allowing Southwestern to score again. Freshman keeper Hugh Elliott gave a fantastic performance with seven saves during regulation time, and another during the second period of extra time.

The Rams maintained a steady and effective strategy with a total 50% of shots on goal. Junior Oscar Odriozola put the ball into the back of the net to tie it up in the 72nd minute, assisted by freshman Gerardo Lopez.

With no tiebreaking goal, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Rams are now 2-1-1 while the Moundbuilders are 3-1-1.
