FORT WORTH— The Texas Wesleyan women's basketball team (15-2, 9-2 SAC) defeated JBU (7-12, 3-8) 74-72 in overtime on a made shot by
Kertisa Amos with 1.4 seconds left in the game.
The Lady Rams found themselves trailing 16-15 with less than two minutes left in the first quarter. Freshman
Zarria Carter scored back to back baskets to cap off a 4-0 run to end the first quarter with the Lady Rams leading the Golden Eagles 19-16.
The Lady Rams continued their momentum from the first period of play by starting the second period on a 7-0 run with 2 baskets by
Zarria Carter and a
Hailee Walls three-pointer to cap off the run extending the TXWES lead to 28-20 halfway through the 2nd quarter. With less than a minute left in the first half
Makayla Coy soared through the paint for an offensive rebound and put back to extend the lead to 37-29 at halftime.
The Lady Rams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first seven minutes of the third quarter as they only scored 5 points during that stretch. Senior
Tianna Tullis scored back to back layups at the end of the third quarter to extend the TXWES lead to 47-46 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Rams battled in the fourth quarter as they had a 59-56 lead with 2:41 left in regulation after a huge shot by
Mary Nyakundi as the shot clock expired.
Zarria Carter made two free-throws with 17 seconds left to tie the game at 61.
After a
Kertisa Amos steal with 6.9 seconds left in the game, TXWES was not able to capitalize with a winning basket as the game needed overtime to be decided.
Makayla Coy energized the Lady Rams in overtime with back-to back layups to give TXWES a 65-63 lead with 3:05 left in the overtime. TXWES played great defense which set up the Lady Rams with one last chance to win the game.
Kertisa Amos drove right and knocked down the game winning shot with 1.4 seconds left in the game.
Freshman
Zarria Carter recorded her 8th double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Junior
Kertisa Amos scored 15 points on 7-11 shooting. TXWES dominated the paint with 30 points on the block. Junior
Makayla Coy almost recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds and 8 points. The Lady Rams shot 26-87 from the field (29 percent.) The Lady Rams scored 25 points off the bench.
The Lady Rams move to 11-0 at home and move to 7-9 all-time against JBU.
TXWES will travel to Waxahachie on Thursday, Jan. 20 to take on SouthWestern Assemblies of God University at 6 p.m.
