The Texas Wesleyan Rams (7-2, 6-2 SAC) faced off against the Texas College Steers (1-7, 1-5 SAC) Saturday in Tyler, Texas, at All Saints High School, for their fifth-ever meetup in conference play.
TXWES was able to bounce back from the loss against Louisiana Christian University last week with a win over the Steers, 40-12.
The Rams started the game with a kickoff of 64 yards for Francisco Castillo, with the defense stopping the Steers' first drive in eight plays and forcing a punt. WR Jaysen Price took the punt return in for an 85-yard touchdown, including a 2-point conversion by
Dylan Pettway, giving the Rams the lead, 8-0.
The possession of the ball with both teams changed hands seven times, including an interception from defensive backs
Chance Carroll and
Vondrice LaFrance. The Rams capitalized on the interception from LaFrance with a 2-yard rushing touchdown by RB Ernie Ceasar. Finishing a two-play 11-yard drive, with a failed two-point conversion, increased the lead to 14-0.
The TXWES defense forced the Steers to punt after a failed drive, giving the offense a chance. From there, Ceasar scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown after a 5-play drive for 26 yards, including another 2-point conversion by Pettway, making the score 22-0.
The Steers could not score in the first half after several missed opportunities. The TXWES offense started on the field in the 3rd quarter, with QB Carson Rodgers scoring a 2-yard rushing touchdown after an 8-play drive for 59 yards, leaving the score 29-0.
After a scoring drive from the Steers, the Rams made an offensive effort to respond but were only able to score a field goal by K Armando Benitez from 29-yards.
The TXWES defense forced another punt giving the offense the advantage in the final minutes of the 3rd quarter. RB Nick David-West found the endzone on a 10-yard rushing touchdown ending a 3-play drive for 21 yards, with a two-point conversion for Cam Chapman, making the final score 40-12.
Carson finished with one rushing touchdown and 94 passing yards on 10-23, with most of the receptions going to wide receivers
AJ Bobb for 30 yards on three catches, Terrill Curtis had 28 yards on two receptions, and Brandon Rolfe had one reception for 21 yards.
Ceasar and David-West combined for 33 rushes for 267 yards and three touchdowns.
Darius Van Dyke, with six, and Sir Hill, with four, led the team in tackles.
Defensive backs LaFrance and Carroll each recorded an interception for the defense.
The Rams finished with 430 yards, including 336 rushing yards on 49 attempts and 94 passing yards on 10-23, while the defense allowed 273 yards.
Now 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the SAC, the Rams will play the North American University Stallions (2-6) in Fort Worth, Texas, at Farrington Field on Saturday, November 5, at 3 PM.
