WBB: Lady Rams start SAC play with back-to-back wins

The Lady Rams tied a school record for most three-pointers in a game with a 97-75 shellacking of John Brown University at home Saturday.

The win puts Texas Wesleyan at 4-1 overall and 2-0 in SAC play as they head into the Thanksgiving break.

Texas Wesleyan's bench came alive for the Lady Rams scoring 57 of the 97 points in the game. Savanna Smith led the effort off the bench with 24 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals, earning her the player of the game. Smith, a freshman guard, teamed up with Zionna Barbee, another freshman guard who scored in double figures with 17 points and scored 5 of 6 from three-point range. The duo accounted for nine of the Lady Rams' 15 three-pointers,with Mary Nyakundi accounting for four other three-pointers, scoring double figures off the bench. Nyakundi scored 14 and had two assists.

The Lady Rams opened the game with the hot hand for the first time this season, scoring 50% from the field in the first quarter. The only quarter when they didn't shoot above 50% was the second when they shot 45% from the field. Texas Wesleyan shot 50.7% from the field for the game, while the Golden Eagles shot 48.1% from the field.

But it was the 3-point game that made the difference. John Brown was 42.9% from 3-point range going 9 for 21, while the Lady Rams were 50% from 3-point range, hitting an eye-popping 15 three-pointers to tie a school record for most 3-pointers in a game.

After starting down 11-4 in the first quarter, the Lady Rams went into high gear, with Makayla Coy, Kertis Amos and Smith getting the Rams to 11-8. Then, the first 3-point barrage began. Smith hit the first three-pointer at 6:49; Barbee hit the next three-pointer at 5:49; NaTeiona Cole followed with a three-pointer at 4:38; Barbee added another at 2:42 to put the Lady Rams firmly in the driver's seat at 22-18. After that, the lead only increased.

The second period had the Lady Rams keeping up the three-point pace as Nyakundi hit back-to-back 3-pointers at 9:03 and 8:34 as she answered a 3-pointer from John Brown's Natalie Smith. Barbee added another three with 3:41 left in the half, while Amos ended the half with a layup to give the Lady Rams a 48-36 lead.

Smith and Barbee got back on the 3-point track at 5:27 and 4:57 in the game. Then Nyakundi followed with back-to-back 3-pointers at 3:35 and 3:04 in the game. Barbee added another with 31 seconds left in the third.

Smith added two more 3-pointers in the fourth, and Coy got on the 3-pointer bandwagon with 4:05 left in the game. Smith tried for one more three-pointer with 30 seconds left in the game, which would have given Texas Wesleyan a 100-point game, but she couldn't connect. The Lady Rams won in their second SAC game, 97-75.

In addition to Smith, Barbee and Nyakundi, Amos finished in double figures with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Coy almost hit a double-double, scoring 9 points and nabbing 11 rebounds.

The contest was the last game for the Lady Rams before the Thanksgiving Break. The Lady Rams return to action on Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. facing UNT-Dallas on the road. The Trailblazers are undefeated thus far at 3-0, with their only losses coming in exhibition games. The two teams have only met twice, with Texas Wesleyan winning both meetings in SAC play last season.
