Box Score The Texas Wesleyan Lady Rams stayed undefeated after eking out a win over Concordia University of Nebraska 73-71.
The win improves the Lady Rams to 9-1 overall. The Bulldogs of Concordia came into the game on a three-game win streak, but the Lady Rams' rebounding told the tale as Texas Wesleyan finished the game with a 39-23 rebound advantage. The Lady Rams entered the week leading the nation in rebound margin and did not disappoint against the Bulldogs.
Texas Wesleyan jumped out to a 9-point lead at the end of the first quarter and that lead never changed throughout the game, extending to 14 in the third quarter. But the fourth quarter saw the Bulldogs effectively gain ground on the Lady Rams with a relentless press, bringing the game within one point at 65-64 with 4:13 left in the game. Two free throws from
Zarria Carter gave the Lady Rams a brief 3-point lead, but they pulled within one again with 3:21 left in the game.
The Lady Rams capitalized on their rebounding advantage on the next possession as a Carter missed jumper was rebounded by
Kertisa Amos, who scored an easy layup. Concordia couldn't capitalize on the next possession, and a Lady Ram rebound resulted in another easy layup from
Makayla Coy, bringing the score to 71-66 with 2:16 left in the game. Both teams went cold on shots until the Bulldogs scored with less than a minute in the game. Amos added two free throws for the Lady Rams with 19 seconds left in the game. A Concordia layup left the Lady Rams with a 73-71 advantage and 4 seconds left in the game. A
Na'Teiona Cole foul followed a Texas Wesleyan timeout, but Concordia couldn't sink the free throws, and the Lady Bulldogs' comeback efforts fell short at 73-71.
Zarria Carter led all players with 23 points, six rebounds and three steals. While Amos had 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals. In addition, Coy and
Taryn Wills scored 11 points each and nabbed four rebounds each.
The Lady Rams travel to San Antonio for the Our Lady of the Lake Classic Friday, Dec. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 31. They return home on Jan. 2 for another SAC game against Mid-America Christian University. The Lady Rams have traditionally struggled with MACU, holding a 5-16 record overall.
