Rams fall 61-60 against Wayland Baptist

FORT WORTH-- The Texas Wesleyan men's basketball team (18-8, 11-7 SAC) suffered a 61-60 loss against Wayland Baptist (15-11, 11-8) on a last second three-point shot by Josh Servantez at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday night.

The Rams had a tough start to the first half as WBU started the gam on a 22-6 run. TXWES was able to battle back with a 19-10 run to make the score 32-23 with less than 6 minutes to play in the first half. A Peyton Sallee three-pointer capped off the run and energized the crowd.

The Rams shot 10 of 23 from the field (43 percent) in the first half, scoring 12 points in the paint, and corralling 9 total rebounds. 

Davon Berry and Sebastian Karwoski each scored 6 points in the first half. Peyton Sallee scored 5 points, Vydal Bradford scored 4 points, and Lamine Komara scored 2 points in the first half.

After one half of play, TXWES trailed 39-36 going into the break.

To start the second half, senior Davon Berry ignited a spark scoring 7 points in the first 4 minutes of the half. Junior Kristian Lafayette capped off the 9-0 run with a turnaround jump-shot to make the score 37-36. The Rams took a 43-42 lead after Lafayette rocked the rim with a tenacious dunk, Peyton Sallee hit a three-pointer, and a layup made by Karwoski.

WBU made a layup to take a 44-43 lead with 12:32 left in the game. Peyton Sallee energized the crowd with a huge made three-pointer to take a 46-44 lead with 12 minutes left in the game. Wayland Baptist regained the lead after a dunk, which made the score 50-48 with 10:38 left in the game.

RJ Mason hit a three-pointer that extended the Pioneers lead to 53-48 with 6:56 left in the game. A tough made jump-shot by Bradford, and four consecutive points by Karwoski cut the deficit the Rams faced to one point. A three-pointer by Lafayette and an acrobatic layup by Sallee gave the Rams a 59-55 lead with 3:30 left in the game. 

TXWES energized the crowd with tough defensive play and big-time shot making. The Rams held the Pioneers scoreless for a four minute stretch in the second half. A made three-pointer by RJ Mason cut the Rams lead to 2 points with 1:53 left in the game. 

Josh Servantez hit a game-winning three-pointer with 3.8 seconds left in the game. Vydal Bradford missed a shot as time expired and the Rams fell 61-60 in a tough, hard-fought game.

TXWES moves to 26-28 all-time against Wayland Baptist. The Rams will host senior day on Saturday, Feb.12 against OPSU at the Sid Richardson Center.
