WAXAHACHIE-- The Texas Wesleyan baseball team (11-8, 0-1) lost 4-3 in 10 innings on Friday afternoon against Southwestern Assemblies of God University (13-3, 1-0) in the first game of Sooner Athletic Conference play.
SAGU scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning after holding TXWES scoreless in the top of the first inning. The Rams put a run on the scoreboard on a double to right field by
Tomas Sanchez to score
Chaesten Chon to cut the deficit to 1 run. SAGU led 2-1 after three innings of play.
The pitching staff for both teams stepped up in the next three innings as neither team was able to score a run. Heading to the top of the 7th inning, the Lions led 2-1 in a low-scoring, defensive minded game.
TXWES tied the game at 2 in the seventh inning on a double by
Greyson Barrett that scored
Marcos Sanchez. The Rams took its first lead of the game in the eighth inning on a double to right center by
Hayden Hutchins to score
Joseph Barfield. The Lions evened the score at 3 in the top of the ninth inning after scoring the tying run on an error.
The opening game of conference play needed extra innings to decided. The Rams were not able to score a run in the top of the tenth inning. SAGU hit a walk-off single to left field to win the game 4-3.
Morgan McCloud pitched four innings on the mound, striking out two batters, and giving up two earned runs and five hits.
Brayden McAlister pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and zero earned runs.
Garrett Moltzan moves to 1-2 on the season.
