MSOC: Rams lose SAC opener to Oklahoma City University 2-0

The Rams opened conference play at home Sept. 27 with a loss against Oklahoma City University 2-0.

The two teams had met 14 times prior to Tuesday's game, with the Stars leading the series 8-3-2.

The Rams traded shots on goal with Oklahoma City throughout the first period, but the Stars' shots were wide or high. The Stars goalie Danilo Vilani saved shot-after-shot from the Rams. Vilani had eight saves in the game in 90 minutes of play. At 36:29 into the game, an Oklahoma City kick slipped by Texas Wesleyan goalie Alex Heinle, and the Stars took the 1-0 lead into the half.

In the second period, the Rams had five corner kick opportunities they weren't able to capitalize on, while Oklahoma City had only one. The Stars were able to score their second goal of the evening after a Jim Van Dijk save at 67:04. The Stars shot back at the Rams at 67:30, and a Lucas de Freitas kick found the back of the net to give Oklahoma City its second goal of the game and a 2-0 lead.

The Rams were never able to get their offense on track in the second period, shooting wide and high, but a strong defensive showing from Vilani also proved too much for Texas Wesleyan. The Rams led the Stars with 9 shots on goal to Oklahoma City's 6, but the Stars were able to collect all of the saves.

The loss brought the Rams to 7-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in SAC play.

The Rams travel to Bethany, Oklahoma, for a Saturday, Oct. 1 matchup against Southwestern Christian University at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles come into the match at 2-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference. The two teams met earlier in the season at Martin Field when the Rams beat the Eagles 3-1.
