WSOC: Lady Rams drop SAC opener to Oklahoma City University 3-0

The Lady Rams opened conference play at home Sept. 27 with a loss to Oklahoma City University 3-0.

The two teams had met 15 times prior to Tuesday's game. The last time Texas Wesleyan won was in 2019, but the Lady Rams do hold a 5-2 record over the Stars at home.

The Lady Rams were out-shot in the first period by Oklahoma City 11-4, but the Stars only had 2 shots in the second period, while Texas Wesleyan had seven. The big difference was that Oklahoma City had twice as many shots on goal as the Lady Rams at 12-6 and twice as many corner kicks at 6-3.

In the first period, Oklahoma City jumped out to an early lead with a goal scored with only 2:27 into the game. The Stars scored a second goal at 7:25 to make the score 2-0 within 10 minutes of the start of the game before the Lady Rams were able to get off a shot. Texas Wesleyan finally got off a shot at 11:40 into the game as a Cara Zwilling shot was saved by Oklahoma City goalie Irene Gonzalez, who had all six saves for the Stars in her 90 minutes of play. Zwilling had two shots on goal during the game to lead all Texas Wesleyan players but was unable to find the back of the net.

Oklahoma City scored a third goal at 26:21 in the first period. That was the last time either team would score.

Texas Wesleyan goalie Reese Blanton was able to get four of her seven saves in the last few minutes of the first half to keep the score at 3-0 at the half.

The Lady Rams were never able to get their offense on track in the second period, shooting wide and high. The Stars won the game 3-0 after a scoreless second period.

The loss brought the Lady Rams to 2-6-0 overall and 0-1-0 in SAC play.

The Lady Rams travel to Bethany, Oklahoma, for a Saturday, Oct. 1 matchup against Southwestern Christian University at 1 p.m. as they continue SAC play. The Eagles come into the match at 3-2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference. The Lady Rams hold a perfect record against Southwestern Christian at 11-0.
