On Saturday, Sept. 4th, 2022, Texas Wesleyan Rams (2-0, 1-0 SAC) traveled to Glendale, Arizona, to play the Arizona Christian Firestorm (0-1, 0-1 SAC).
At the start of the first quarter, the Rams' offense did not give up after the first drive failed, as did the Firestorm. On the next drive, the Rams ran a trick play through A.J. Bobb for 28 yards for a touchdown, giving the Rams an 8 to 0 lead after running another trick play for the two-point conversion. The ensuing drive by the Firestorm was unsuccessful, forcing them to punt on fourth down. The Rams then pushed down the field and got a field goal, giving the Rams an 11-0 lead before the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started with the Firestorm having the ball on the one-yard line and scoring a few seconds into the quarter, leaving the Rams leading the contest 11-7. After the Firestorm scored, the Rams pushed down the field, only to go for a field goal in the red zone, but they missed. On the following drive, the Firestorm could not make it passed the 50, so they were forced to punt on fourth down. In the first play of the next drive, starting QB
Dalton Dale threw 60 yards to Bobb for another Rams touchdown, for a Rams lead of 18-7.
After a failed drive by the Firestorm, the Rams pushed down to the 24-yard line but missed the attempted field goal. The Firestorm were able to compromise on the next drive pushing down the field for more than 60 yards with back-to-back big plays, the last one ending with a touchdown pass to Aiden Quinn, leaving the score 18-14.
On the ensuing drive, Dale threw to
Jaysen Price for a 48-yard touchdown, giving the Rams an extended lead of 25-14. The Red Hawks pushed hard the next drive but could not score before halftime, keeping the score at 25-14.
In the second half, the Firestorm failed on the third quarter's first drive, forcing a punt on fourth down. But, Firestorm DB Riley Tucker intercepted Dale, giving the Firestorm a chance to score. After the Red Hawks pushed down the field, starting QB Tyler Duncan faked the handoff and kept it for himself for a rushing touchdown, closing the scoring to 25-21. With the next drive by the Rams, RB Earnest Caesar takes for a 40-yard run after a solid catch from Bobb. Caesar then takes the ball right up the gut of the defense after a penalty, extending the lead to 31-21, Caesar's second game score.
The next drive was a rollercoaster ride consisting of penalties left and right, allowing the Rams to line up in the other team's red zone, with Caesar scoring another TD for the Rams, giving them a 38-21 lead.
The defense played exquisitely for the rest of the game, shutting the Firestorm out. In the next possession, Dale kept the ball after the fake handoff and scored another touchdown for the Rams, extending the lead to 45-21. The Rams got a field goal, closing the scoring with a final score of 48-21.
Dale went 11 for 21, throwing for 212 yards, and Ceasar had 16 attempts running for 195 yards. The offense had 539 yards while only allowing 275 yards defensively.
