The #17 Texas Wesleyan Lady Rams made program history by winning their 17th game in a row over Oklahoma City University 96-75.
The win keeps Texas Wesleyan undefeated in SAC play at 13-0 with an overall record of 18-1.
Once again, four Lady Rams scored in double figures while
Zarria Carter returned to the starting line-up in thunderous fashion, recording a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Kertisa Amos led all scorers with 25 points, while
Taryn Wills scored 18 points, and
Makayla Coy scored 10 points and nabbed eight rebounds, just missing a double-double.
Na'Teiona Cole scored nine points, and
Keara Felix scored eight points.
The game at the Sid Richardson Center saw the Lady Rams start off tentatively as the smell of "history-making" hung in the air. After ending the first quarter with a 21-21 tie and going into the locker room leading by just two points, the Lady Rams returned to the court all business.Â
Six unanswered points by Texas Wesleyan got the third quarter started, but the Stars weren't about to give in to keep the game within reach at 51-47. But Texas Wesleyan's half-court trapping defense proved lethal for the Stars as the Lady Rams went from leading by two points at the half to a 16-point lead at the end of the third quarter, 69-53.Â
Texas Wesleyan's defense converted 20 Oklahoma City turnovers into 27 points, stretching their largest lead to 26 in the fourth with 4:57 left in the game. The Rams overcame a second quarter that saw them shooting 39% from the field with solid defense in the third to give them 56 overall points in the paint.Â
As the Lady Rams wait for the next NAIA poll to drop on Jan. 25, with a decisive win over #19 USAO and decisive victories over all of their opponents since the last poll, look for Texas Wesleyan to move up from the #17 slot.
The Lady Rams travel to Siloam Springs, Arkansas, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, against John Brown University as they seek to extend their winning streak to 18.Â
