On Saturday, the #17 Texas Wesleyan Lady Rams traveled to Siloam Springs, AK, and lost to James Brown University 83-70.
The loss was the Lady Rams' first conference loss and only their second loss of the season. The last loss came in the second game of the season against Louisiana State University-Shereveport on November 10, 2022.
John Brown stopped the Lady Rams' win streak of 17 games, one game better than the previous school record of 16 games straight, accomplished by the Lady Rams in 1978-1979.
Once again, four Lady Rams scored in double figures, with hitting 12 Kertisa Amos hitting on five of 20 from the field for 18 points in 24 minutes. Makayla Coy scored 16 points and nabbed 14 rebounds for a double-double. In addition, Zarria Carter scored 14 and pulled 18 rebounds for the Lady Rams' second double-double of the game. Taryn Wills came off the bench and contributed 12 points, including four of four from the free throw line in 21 minutes.
The game was at the Bill George Arena and was an even match for the first 14 minutes. From there, the Golden Eagles were able to take the lead on Emily Sanders 3 pointer with 6:50 left in the second quarter, giving John Brown a two-point lead, 26-24. They would jump to a nine-point lead on the Lady Rams late in the second quarter. However, the Lady Rams were able to cut the lead to seven points at the end of the first half.
The Lady Rams brought the game back to within a single point several times in the third quarter. The first came with 9:08 left in the third quarter after a Zarria Carter jump shot good for 2. She was bringing the Lady Rams to a point behind, 39-38. The next time The Lady Rams would get as close came on a Taryn Wills jump shot with 3;33 left in the third quarter.The Golden Eagles' inside play was a factor in the outcome of the contest, with the John Brown providing 40 points in the paint and 26 points in turnovers. Compared to the Lady Rams, who scored 31 points in the paint and 17 points off turnovers. Texas Wesleyan produced more second chances and bench points than Jong Brown. Both categories say The Lady Rams' advantage over the Golden Eagles is 17 points to 15 points.
The loss moves the Lady Rams' overall record to 18-2 and their SAC record to 13-1. Giving the Lady Rams a one-game advantage over Science & Arts University, and a three-game lead over Mid-America Christian
The Lady Rams will next play at home on January 26 in the Sid Richardson Center against the University of North Texas-Dallas, with tip-off scheduled for 6 PM.
