Texas Wesleyan took an early lead with a 57-yard field goal by
Gerrit Blodgett put them up 3-0 in the first quarter. Wayland Baptist (TX) responded with a 49-yard field goal by Leo Marini, leveling the score at 3-3.
However, Texas Wesleyan regained the lead late in the first quarter with a
2-yard touchdown run by Ashton Mitchell, followed by a successful kick by Blodgett, making it 10-3.
Marini's 37-yard field goal in the second quarter brought Wayland Baptist (TX) within four points. Wayland Baptist then seized an opportunity, intercepting a pass, and Corey McCoy returned it for a touchdown. With Marini's extra point, they took a 13-10 lead into halftime.
Texas Wesleyan came back strong in the third quarter, with
Vernon Harrison scoring a touchdown on a 6-yard run.
Gerrit Blodgett's kick extended their lead to 17-13. Ashton Mitchell added to the lead with a 3-yard rushing touchdown near the end of the third quarter, making it 24-13 in favor of Texas Wesleyan.
The final quarter remained scoreless for both teams, and the game ended with Texas Wesleyan celebrating a well-earned victory.
Texas Wesleyan's strong running game, led by
Vernon Harrison, proved to be the difference-maker, while Wayland Baptist (TX) displayed a solid defensive performance with McCoy's interception and touchdown.
The Rams will travel on the road next week and face off against Texas College, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. in Tyler, Texas.
