FORT WORTH, TX – For the second straight week, the women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat, this time against Mid America Christian University 54-56 loss in inside the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday night.
First quarter saw the Rams dominate the Evangels taking an 11-4 lead to start the contest. The Rams would find early success from the field knocking down shots with the MACU defenders swarming around them. MACU would do the best to catch the Rams going on a mini run to cut the deficit to 13-10 heading into the second quarter.
The Evangels would do their best to slow the momentum of the Rams as they continued to score. MACU would get into early foul trouble in the quarter and the Rams would take seven trips to the free throw line going 7-15. MACU would keep things close down the stretch pulling within three points to go into the half trailing 27-24.
MACU would come out of the halftime break fired up as they would score in the first few seconds of the quarter. The Evangels would take their first lead of the contest after draining a shot from beyond to force Texas Wesleyan to call a timeout. From here the two teams would battle back and forth in the final 90 seconds of play. Kamryn Gibson would drain two consecutive three point shots to cut the lead to 40-41. Not to be outdone, the Evangels would knock another shot to go up 40-44 as the quarter ended.
The Rams would come out strong and continue to attack the Evangels in the paint where they found early success. Evangels would hold the slight edge over the Rams for most of the quarter as they would step up their defense. Down 47-48 the Rams would head to the free throw line where Mary Nyakundi would go 1-1 to tie the match up. Sophia Hurtado would come up big with a three-point shot to regain the lead over the Evangels. Not ready to let up, MACU would fire off a three-point shot of their own to tie the game back up at 51-51 with 4 minutes left. The Evangels would come up big with a layup to capture the lead. A late foul from MACU would Hurtado to the line where should go 1-1 to cut the lead down to 52-53. MACU would keep the pressure on Texas Wesleyan scoring another bucket to push their lead. The Ras answered the call with a another shot as the game clock wounded down. A late foul by the Rams would send MACU to the line where they would go 1-1 bringing the score to 54-56. With the clock running out the Rams would take a one more drive to the basketball and just miss a game tying layup as it rolled out the basket. MACU would recover the rebound and hold onto to their two-point lead to defeat the Rams 54-56.
Taryn Wills finished the game with 13 points and Mary Nyakundi would add 10 points of her own. Sophia Hurtado would come big on the boards with seven rebounds in the loss.
The Rams are back inside the Sid Richardson Center Monday Dec. 11 for a match against Southwestern Christian University with a 6 PM tip-off.
