SB: Rams drop two on Saturday at SCS Invitational

Home opener scheduled for Friday

The Texas Wesleyan softball team dropped back-to-back games on Saturday after back-to-back games on Friday at the SCS Invitational in Allen.

The Rams started the day against the Bellevue University Bruins from Nebraska with a strong defensive showing in the first inning. The Bruins came out swinging with two singles in the first two at bats, but a pop-up fly to Krysta White at third and two strike outs courtesy of Brynna Foster cleaned up the inning and got the Rams out ahead as Bellevue left two on base.

Texas Wesleyan wasn't able to convert that momentum to a run after Alyssa Bates' single and stolen base left her stranded at second as Lauren Jurek retired the Rams for Bellevue.

It wasn't until the fourth that either team was able to connect on hits. Bellevue's Myla Beckstrom struck pay dirt with a solo homer in the inning.

The Rams looked like they would answer back in the fifth inning as Devin Dunn doubled to left field. White moved Dunn to third with a sacrifice followed by a single from Khloe Summers, but the rally fell short as Beckstrom retired the next two batters to leave two runners on base for the Rams.

The seventh inning was when the Bruins took control of the game. After a walk put a Bruin on base, a single to left field scored one runner, and an error put another runner across the plate, giving Bellevue a 3-0 lead.

In the final at bat, the Rams' single from E.B. Zimmerman was followed by two grounders to the shortstop.

Overall, the Rams had five hits and one error and left four players on base in the 3-0 loss.

In the second game of the day, the Rams faced the #16 Columbia College Cougars. It was a pitchers' battle for five innings as Texas Wesleyan's Taylor Tubbs kept the Cougar offense in check.

In the sixth the Cougars came out swinging after a double to right field and error by the Rams put Columbia within striking distance. Another double gave the Cougars the first run of the game and left runners in scoring position. Columbia was able to put two more on the board with sacrifice hits before Tubbs saved the inning for the Rams, leaving one on base.

Texas Wesleyan had one more chance to tame the Cougars but could only manage a single in their final at bat suffering a 3-0 loss. With the loss, the Rams finish the SCS Invitational at 1-4.

The Rams' home opener at Sycamore Park at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, is a doubleheader against Ottawa University. The two teams are tied in their series meetings at 4-4 with the Rams taking the last three matchups from 2022.
