On Saturday, Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball played Wayland Baptist a day after securing the conference championship, which marked the Lady Rams first conference championship win since the 1989-90 season, despite the 62-90 defeat.
The Lady Rams scored 17 points in the first quarter and was outscored by Wayland Baptist, who scored 26. Despite being down by nine points at the end of the first quarter, the team showed their resilience by scoring 16 points in the second quarter, trailing by only seven points at halftime. However, Wayland Baptist's offense proved too much to handle in the second half, as they outscored Texas Wesleyan 38-29.
Kertisa Amos, a senior guard, led the team with 14 points and went 10-for-12 from the free-throw line.
Taryn Wills and
Makayla Coy also contributed 10 points each, while
Zarria Carter had eight rebounds. Texas Wesleyan's offense struggled throughout the game, shooting only 23.9% from the field and 20% from beyond the arc.
Despite the team's struggles on the offensive end, Texas Wesleyan's defense held Wayland Baptist to 44.9% shooting from the field and 29.4% from three-point range.
Na'Teiona Cole and
Mary Nyakundi were active on the defensive end, as they combined for three steals. However, the team failed to force Wayland Baptist into turnovers, as they only had three steals throughout the game.
The Lady Rams may have fallen short in the final game of the regular season against the Flying Queens. Despite struggling on the offensive end, the team's defensive efforts kept them in the game. With a strong core of players returning next season, the team will look to build on their success and compete for another conference championship.
