FORT WORTH, TX — Texas Wesleyan University (5-2, 1-2 SAC) fell short in a hard-fought battle against Nelson (Texas) (5-3, 3-2) on Monday, losing 80-73 at the Sid Richardson Center.
The Rams struggled early in the game, facing a significant deficit after the first half. Despite efforts from several players, Texas Wesleyan's offense struggled with accuracy, finishing the half with a 36-51 deficit. Missed layups, turnovers, and an off-night from beyond the arc contributed to the slow start. Montez Young Jr. and Trey Sinegal were unable to convert key opportunities, which allowed Nelson (Texas) to maintain control throughout the first 20 minutes.
Texas Wesleyan had some bright spots in the opening half, as Richard Amaefule grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 9 points, but the team could not get past a hot-shooting Nelson squad. Preston Lawrence led the way for Nelson (Texas) with 14 points, including 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range.
In the second half, the Rams showed resilience and fought back, trimming the deficit to as few as 5 points. Amaefule continued to dominate, finishing with 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Young contributed 15 points off the bench. Vegas Evans added 11 points, but Texas Wesleyan's struggles from long range — shooting just 6-of-27 from three-point territory — ultimately doomed the Rams' comeback efforts.
Despite an improved performance in the second half, including better shooting (54.2 percent), Texas Wesleyan could not overcome the early deficit. Nelson (Texas) capitalized on turnovers and maintained their lead, with key performances from JJ Boling and Trace Boling, who combined for 21 points.
The Rams return to action Dec. 5 as the travel to John Brown University, with tipoff slated for 7:45 pm.
