FORT WORTH, TX - The Texas Wesleyan Rams held off a determined Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies squad for a hard-fought 62-59 victory at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
The win evens the Rams' Sooner Athletic Conference record at 4-4, improving their overall mark to 8-4, while the Aggies fell to 3-8 overall and 1-7 in SAC play.
Both teams battled to a 29-29 stalemate in the first half, showcasing scrappy defense and momentum swings. Texas Wesleyan leaned on Montez Young, Jr., with 10 points and nine rebounds. Trey Sinegal led all Rams scorers with 13 points, including clutch free throws in the second half. The Aggies' Mike Carter led his team with 12 points on efficient shooting, while Abdulh Diaby added 11 points and six rebounds. Despite their struggles from beyond the arc, shooting just 16.7% from three-point range, Oklahoma Panhandle State capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, converting 17-of-24 attempts.
The game featured seven lead changes and ten ties, as neither team managed to establish a significant advantage. Texas Wesleyan's largest lead came midway through the first half at 10 points, while the Aggies' largest margin was just two.
Key defensive stops late in the game made the difference for the Rams. Young, Jr.'s timely tip-ins and Sinegal's perimeter defense stymied the Aggies' final push. Anthony Sierras came off the bench to provide seven points and critical energy during the closing minutes.
Despite missing 14 free throws, the Rams controlled the paint with 36 points and turned 19 Aggies turnovers into 19 points. Texas Wesleyan also demonstrated depth, with 19 points coming from the bench.
