FORT WORTH, TX - The Texas Wesleyan Rams delivered a record-setting defensive performance on December 14, holding Oklahoma Panhandle State to 21 points, the fewest allowed in program history.
The remarkable achievement surpassed the previous record of 24 points set during the 2001-02 season against UT-Dallas. The Rams controlled the game from start to finish, securing a commanding 67-21 victory at the Sid Richardson Center.
The Rams set the tone early, forcing turnovers and dominating the boards in the first quarter. Savanna Smith and Kameryn Phillips spearheaded the offensive attack, combining for 15 of the team's 16 first-quarter points.
Phillips' layups and Smith's three-pointers highlighted the Rams' ability to convert defensive stops into fast-break opportunities. Texas Wesleyan closed the quarter on a 9-0 run, taking a solid 16-11 lead.
The second quarter showcased the Rams' defensive dominance, as they limited OPSU to just two points. Sophia Hurtado's flawless 8-for-8 performance at the free-throw line underscored the team's efficiency.
Meanwhile, strong contributions from Peyton Foster and Imani Mitchell on both ends of the floor extended the Rams' lead to 33-13 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Rams' intensity only grew. Smith and Phillips combined for several steals and layups, further stretching the lead.
Foster's three-pointer and Giani Wimbish-Gay's consistent scoring off the bench highlighted the team's depth. Texas Wesleyan's defense stifled the Aggies, allowing only five points in the quarter and closing with a commanding 55-18 advantage.
The fourth quarter allowed the Rams to showcase their bench strength. Fresh legs, including standout moments from Wimbish-Gay, kept the pressure on OPSU. Despite some missed opportunities, the Rams' defensive rebounding and control of the tempo sealed the victory.
With this win, Texas Wesleyan improved to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while Oklahoma Panhandle State fell to 1-10. The Rams' historic defensive effort reflects their teamwork, resilience, and commitment to excellence as they build on this momentum heading into the remainder of the season.
