WBB: Rams Come Up Short in Bethany

BETHANY, OK- The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team suffered another loss on the road against Southwestern Christian University 65-71 Saturday afternoon.
 
The first quarter would Texas Wesleyan fall behind early after the Eagles would drain a three-point shot to start the game. The Rams offensive efforts would struggle to find ways to score as Southwestern Christian would take the lead and finish the quarter with a 22-15 lead.
 
Texas Wesleyan would struggle heavily in the second quarter only scoring eight points to the Eagle's 17. The rams would shoot 22.22 % (4-18) from the field and go 0-9 from beyond the arch. Heading into half time the Southwestern Christian would hold a 39-23 lead.
 
For much of the third quarter the Rams would turn the tables on the Eagles and outscore their opponents 22-10. Still trailing, Texas Wesleyan would cut into the deficit with Mary Nyakundi leading the way eight points as the Rams would just be down four points as the quarter ended.
 
The final quarter would be tight as the Rams were gaining on the lead that the Eagles have protected since the opening minutes of the contest. Texas Wesleyan would pull within two points only down 47-49 as they looked to take their first lead of the match. Much to the Rams dismay the Eagles would hold strong and come up big down the final stretch to extend the lead and close out the game with a 71-65 victory.
 
Fours Rams would finish with double digits with Nyakundi leading the way with 14 points. Sophia Hurtado would put up 13 points and 11 rebounds while both Taryn Wills and Savanna Smith each added 11 points.
 
Next up for Texas Wesleyan is a trip to Plainview, TX for a game against the Flying Queens of Wayland Baptist University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM at the Hutcherson Center on Thursday.
