FORT WORTH, TX- In a scheduled 9-inning game that stretched into extra innings, Texas Wesleyan University swept the series against Wayland Baptist in a 12-inning battle, winning 3-2.
Texas Wesleyan struck first in the third inning, as T J Tomlinson's RBI single and
Ryan Flores' sacrifice fly gave them an early 2-0 lead.
Wayland Baptist responded in the sixth inning with a pair of runs, courtesy of Gustavo Nava's RBI single and Delvis Claudio's clutch hit to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither team broke the deadlock in regulation, so the game entered extra innings. At the bottom of the 12th inning, Texas Wesleyan found the breakthrough they needed.
Aiden Kenney's RBI single drove in the winning run, securing the victory for Texas Wesleyan in dramatic fashion.
Pitching was a crucial factor in the game, with both teams receiving solid performances on the mound. Wayland Baptist's Nathan Baca delivered a solid start, going eight innings and allowing just two runs.
However, Texas Wesleyan's bullpen ultimately made the difference, holding Wayland Baptist scoreless over the final four innings to preserve the win.
Dwain Guice was the catalyst for Texas Wesleyan, earning the win with three scoreless innings of relief pitching.
With this victory, Texas Wesleyan improved its record to 26-15 and 14-7 in SAC play, while Wayland Baptist's record now stands at 17-24 and 7-10 in the conference.
The Rams will play next weekend against conference leader Mid-America Christian University in a three-game series, with the first two games scheduled for Friday, with game one starting at noon.
