WBB: Texas Wesleyan Secures 82-70 Victory Over UNT Dallas

FORT WORTH, TX -Texas Wesleyan earned an 82-70 win over UNT Dallas on Saturday, improving to 10-5 overall and 6-5 in SAC play.

The Rams showcased a balanced attack and strong defensive efforts throughout the contest.

The Rams started hot in the first quarter, capitalizing on UNT Dallas turnovers and efficient shooting. Kameryn Phillips scored TXWES' first four points from the free-throw line, while Imani Mitchell delivered from beyond the arc, hitting three three-pointers, including one at the buzzer. Savanna Smith and Phillips anchored the defense, forcing turnovers and creating fast-break opportunities. The Rams closed the quarter with a commanding 27-13 lead.

The Trailblazers fought back in the second quarter, led by Eryka Patton's aggressive play in the paint. Despite the Lions narrowing the gap to six points late in the quarter, TXWES responded with critical plays, including a fast-break layup by Sophia Hurtado and clutch free throws from Mitchell. The Rams entered halftime with a 47-37 advantage.

The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets. Hurtado continued her strong play with a tip-in and jumper to extend the Rams' lead, while Patton carried UNT-D offensively with consistent scoring. Giani Wimbish-Gay provided a spark off the bench for Texas Wesleyan, scoring back-to-back baskets in the paint. A three-pointer from Smith helped the Rams maintain a 66-55 lead heading into the final period.

Texas Wesleyan's defense and composure sealed the victory in the fourth quarter. Mitchell and Phillips led the scoring charge, while Iasia Goldman and Mitchell contributed key blocks to stifle UNT Dallas' attempts at a comeback. Rebounding efforts from Smith and Tayran Wills gave the Rams multiple second-chance opportunities. Late free throws from Mitchell and Wills solidified the 82-70 win.

Mitchell and Phillips each tallied 18 points to lead the Rams, while Smith added 15. UNT Dallas' Patton led all scorers with 27 points.

The Rams return home to play Langston on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center.
