VB: Rams Cruise Past Golden Eagles

SILOAM SPRINGS -  Texas Wesleyan Universtiy (17-4, 14-0 SAC) defeated John Brown University (8-14, 4-10 SAC) 3-0 (25-13, 25-20 and 25-19). The Rams beat the Golden Eagles for the second time this year as they win their fourteenth straight match. The Rams have now won 16 straight sets as well.

In the first set, the Rams got out of the gate fast as they went up 7-0 to start the match with the help of two kills from Migdaly Bernal. The Golden Eagles, after an early timeout, regrouped and closed the gap to 10-8 in favor of the Rams. The Rams then shut down their comeback with an 11-3 run to go up 21-11 and look to take a quick 1-0 lead in the match. Victoria Smith and Sydney Alexander helped lead the Rams during their effective run, and even helped set the Rams up 23-13, but it was Bernal once again with two service aces to close out the set with a final score of 25-13 and that gave the Rams an early 1-0 lead.

The second set started out with things much closer as both teams battled back and forth, but the Rams had the first separation as they found themselves up 8-5. The Golden Eagles soon after went on a five point run and had their first multipoint lead of the game as they led 12-10 in the middle of the set. The Rams tried to battle, but the Golden Eagles maintained, and even extended their lead going up 18-14. The Rams, with the help of three kills from Loes Peijnenburg, went on a seven point run to take the lead 21-18 late in the set. The Rams defense was the deciding factor late as they forced the Golden Eagles to have some costly errors to eventually take the set 25-20 and a 2-0 lead.

In the third set, the Rams found themselves up early once again 10-5 to start the third set. Ruby Romhor added two service aces and a kill from Alexander to take a 15-6 advantage as the Rams looked to make it a 3-0 match. The Golden Eagles battled back to go on a 12-6 run and close the gap to 21-18. The Rams pushed ahead and attempted to keep the Golden Eagles comeback at bay. After a few more back and forth points, the Rams went on a 3-0 run to win the set 25-19 off the final kill from Lyric Biggiers.

Bernal and Peijnenburg led the Rams with seven kills, followed by Alexander with six. Rumohr and Lillian Breaux each had 12 assists to aid the Rams attack. Emily Lewis, Breaux and Rumohr all tallied seven digs. Other huge contributions included four aces from Rumohr, and four blocks from Alexander.

The Rams return to action tomorrow against College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, MO at 1pm.
