FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan University (3-9-2, 1-6-0 SAC) defeated Nelson University (7-6-2, 2-5-0 SAC) 2-1 in Tuesday's contest. The Rams record their first conference win of the season.
In the first half, the Lions started the game extremely aggressive with four shots on goal in the first five minutes, followed by some offense from the Rams. Both teams continued to battle with aggressive play mixed with some solid defense. The Lions were the first one to strike with a goal in the 37th minute to put them up 1-0. The Rams responded with a few more shots, looking for the equalizer to finish the half, but couldn't connect as the Lions led 1-0 going into the half.
In the second half, the Rams were the ones to get things started with a few shots with several close calls. The Rams found their equalizer in the 52nd minute off the foot of
Kayannah Moore to tie the game 1-1. The Rams and Lions continued to fire shots at the goal, hoping that oen of them would be the one to break the tie and take the match. Later in the half, in the 84th minute,
Natalie Ipina found the back of the net with the help of Katheryn Cameron. That goal would prove to be the difference as the Rams reigned victorious over the Lions by a score of 2-1.
Bailey Clark led the team with four shots, all of them on goal, followed by Ipina with three. Goalkeeper
Hannah Smith had a season high 12 saves for the Rams.
"What we did today took guts, coming into this game, knowing that if we didn't win, we won't make the tournament. Coming back from down 1-0 and winning took a lot of heart. I'm so proud of how we preformed today to keep our playoff hopes alive" said head coach Katie Bond.
The Rams return to action on Friday as they travel to Goodwell, OK to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State at 12pm.
