WSOC: Texas Wesleyan Shows Resilience in Soccer Showdown Against Oklahoma Panhandle State

GOODWELL - Texas Wesleyan University (3-11-2, 1-8-0 SAC) displayed determination and spirit in a hard-fought match against Oklahoma Panhandle State University (6-6-1, 3-4-1 SAC) , despite falling 3-0 in a competitive non-conference game on Friday.

The Rams, led by goalkeeper Hannah Smith, showcased their defensive prowess early on, with Smith making multiple key saves to keep the game scoreless in the first half. Texas Wesleyan's defense held strong against a barrage of shots from Oklahoma Panhandle State, including efforts from Emma Contreras, Emily Chavez, and Joyleen Aleman, all thwarted by Smith's quick reflexes.

Offensively, the Rams created several scoring opportunities. Shannyn Hedgecoth tested the Aggies' defense with a shot in the ninth minute, while Haley Ellis and Natalie Ipina also challenged Oklahoma Panhandle State's goalkeeper, Alaralynn Gunderson, with shots on target. In the second half, Texas Wesleyan continued to press, with Hedgecoth striking the crossbar and Kayannah Moore and Yareli Mendoza forcing saves from Gunderson.

Oklahoma Panhandle State broke through in the second half, capitalizing on a penalty kick by Emily Chavez in the 57th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Aggies extended their advantage with goals from Toriana Holt in the 78th minute, assisted by Yaddelis Alderete, and Emma Daskalov in the 80th minute. Despite the scoreline, Texas Wesleyan's relentless effort was evident, with late substitutions like Bianca Herrera and a corner kick from Moore showing their fight until the final whistle.

The Rams will close the regular season on the road against MACU on Tuesday with the game scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
