FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan University (1-0) defeated Arlington Baptist University (0-1) 77-42 in Thursday night's contest. This marks the fifth year in a row the Rams have won their season opener.
The Rams were dominant the entire game, the Rams only trailed six minutes in the entire game as the Rams outscored the Patriots in every quarter.
In the first quarter, the Patriots got things started off with a quick three to take a lead less than a minute into the game. Freshman guard
Alaina Hill helped the Rams get their lead five minutes into the game with a layup to take a 7-6 lead.
Kameryn Phillips added four points of her own to give the Rams a 13-6 lead going into the second quarter.
The second quarter started with a Patriots 10-2 run over to take a 16-15 lead early in the second. The Rams went on a 21-2 run of their own to take a 36-18 lead with the help of
Kyla Speights and
Peyton Foster. The Rams took the lead in the second quarter and never looked back as they dominated the quarter 27-15 to take a 40-21 lead going into halftime.
The third quarter had the Rams using their momentum to create an even bigger lead with the help of Phillips once again.
Aniyah Sanford and Speights hit some big threes late in the quarter to keep up the Rams momentum and helped them outscore the Patriots 18-12 in the third quarter to take a 58-33 lead going into the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter saw some of the Rams' newcomers shine with big threes from transfer
Nala Richardson and freshman
Jenae Moore. The Rams had a solid balance of offense between newcomers and returners as Richardson and Phillips took over the fourth quarter to outscore the Patriots 19-9 in the final quarter and give themselves a big 77-42 victory on their opening night.
The Rams dominated inside as they outscored the Patriots 42-12 in the paint and had some serious help off the bench as they scored 39 of the Rams 77 points. Phillips led the Rams with 17 points, followed by several Rams with nine. Sanford led the team with four assists along with
Sophia Hurtado and Foster each getting blocks to help the Rams defensively.
The Rams return to action Sunday, October 26 against LSU-Shreveport in Shreveport, LA at 1pm.
