FORT WORTH – Texas Wesleyan University (19-4, 16-0 SAC) defeated Oklahoma City University (12-11, 9-8 SAC) 3-0 in Friday night's contest. The Rams extend their win streak to 16 games and remain perfect in conference play.
In the first set, the Rams got started early with a quick 3-0 lead with solid defense and a service ace from
Ruby Rumohr. The Stars had a quick answer and then used that momentum to take a 16-12 lead. The Rams tried to battle back but still struggled as they fell behind 20-15 with the Stars looking to have a dominant first set win. After a quick service ace from
Sydney Alexander was all the Rams needed as they gained a ton of ground on the Stars and even took a 23-22 lead with the help of some kills from
Hanna Rubis. The Rams and Stars continued to battle late in the set going back and forth, but
Victoria Smith got the final kill to lift the Rams to a 26-24 first set victory.
The second set saw both teams continue to battle with the Rams holding a slim lead through the beginning of the set. The Rams used a block point from
Taylor Glendening to fuel a 9-2 run to take an 18-10 lead, the Rams offense was getting production from numerous players including Rubis, Smith and Alexander to give the Rams a commanding lead. The Stars fought back with a 10-2 run of their own to tie things up late in the set 20-20. The Stars attempted to use that momentum to steal the second set from the Rams, but
Migdaly Bernal had other plans as she shut down the Stars and helped the Rams win the next five points to win the set 25-20 and take a 2-0 set lead.
In the third set, the Rams took control in a hurry as they found themselves up 10-3 early in the set. The Rams didn't stop there as they kept their foot on the gas and dominated offensively with several kills from Alexander and Rubis. The Rams took a 13-point lead late in the set as they led the Stars 23-10 with the match victory just two points away. The Rams dominated the entire set as the Rams balance of strong offense and stifling defense proved to be too much for the Stars as they took the third set 25-11 and a 3-0 match victory.
Rubis led the Rams with 13 kills, followed by Smith with nine and Alexander with six. Rumohr aided the Rams attack with 18 assists.
Emily Lewis led the team in digs with 18, followed by Rumohr with 10. Smith and Rubis also tallied five blocks each.
The Rams return to action tomorrow against Southwestern Christian inside the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday, October 25 at 1pm.
