WAXAHACHIE - Texas Wesleyan University (20-5, 17-1 SAC) fell to Nelson University (18-9, 16-2 SAC) 3-0 (25-22, 25-17 and 25-20) in Tuesday night's contest. The Rams and Lions have now split their regular season match ups as both teams won at home.
In the first set, the Rams and Lions traded pairs of points to keep things close early with both teams finding themselves deadlocked at 10-10. The Lions broke the set open with a 10-4 run to take a 20-14 lead late in the set. The Rams made a move of their own by winning five of the next six points with the help of
Hanna Rubis and
Lyric Biggiers. The Rams battled late down the stretch, but unfortunately came up short as the Lions took the first set 25-22.
The second started all Rams as they found themselves up 7-1 with four combined kills from
Victoria Smith and
Sydney Alexander to help get the offense started. The Rams continued to maintain their lead as they were up 11-6, looking to take control of the set. The Lions went on to win 10 straight points to completely flip the tables and take a 16-10 lead over the Rams.
Migdaly Bernal and Alexander led the Rams offense late in the set, but came up short once again as the Lions proved to have built too big a lead for the Rams to over come. The Lions took the second set 25-17 and a 2-0 set lead over the Rams.
The third set saw the Lions momentum carry over as they took an 8-5 early in the set. Two service aces from
Ruby Rumohr and kills from Smith helped the Rams battle back as they even things up at 14-14. The Lions weren't fazed by the Rams attempt to take the lead as they found themselves up 20-17 late in the set and seeking a sweep over their conference rival. The Rams continued to battle to the very end, but their efforts were toppled by yet another Lion set victory as they won 25-20 and a 3-0 match victory.
Alexander led the Rams with nine kills, followed by Bernal and Rubis with six. Rumohr helped facilitate the Rams offensive attack with 21 assists.
Emily Lewis led the Rams defensive efforts as she tallied 20 digs. Alexander also added four blocks and Rumohr recorded three service aces.
The Rams stay on the road this week as they travel to Mcpherson, KS as they take on Central Christian College (KS) on Friday, October 31 at 3pm.
