FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan University (14-4, 11-0 SAC) defeated Central Christian College (KS) (3-14, 1-10 SAC) in three sets (25-16, 25-12 and 25-14). The win marks a 2-0 weekend and an eleventh strait victory for the Rams.
In the first set, the Rams offense proved to be an issue for the Tigers as
Lyric Biggiers and
Sydney Alexander aided the team's eight kills to go up 11-3 early in the set. The Tigers battled back with a few kills of their own to shorten the Rams lead to 11-8, looking to use that momentum to try and take the lead. The Rams took control once again, outscoring the Tigers 9-2 to take a 20-10 lead late in the set.
Victoria Smith led the charge late in the set to finish off the Tigers attempted comeback to take the set 25-16.
The second set started with both teams trading points and keeping things close as the Rams led early with a slim 8-6 lead. The Rams then exploded with a 11-3 run over the Tigers to take a 19-9 lead, looking to use that momentum to win a second set. The Rams finished off the set with two service aces from
Neeley Rutledge as well as kills from
Migdaly Bernal and
Hanna Rubis to take the second set by a score of 25-12.
In the third set, the Rams were looking to complete their second strait match with a 3-0 victory, while the Tigers were looking to take a set in the match. The Tigers found themselves up 8-7 with some solid defense to help them take their first lead of the match. The Rams overpowered the Tigers to not only take away their lead, but started taking control of the set to lead 20-11 with the match in sight. Smith, Biggiers, and Alexander were an impressive trio to lead the Rams to a 25-14 third set win and a 3-0 match victory.
Alexander led the team in kills with 12, followed by Smith with nine.
Ruby Rumohr helped aid the offensive attack with 19 assists, followed by
Lillian Breaux with 11.
Emily Lewis and Rumohr were the defensive standouts with 26 combined digs. Rubis also added four blocks to stop the Tigers' attack.
The Rams return to action on the road next week with a match up on Friday, October 10 against Mid-America Christian at 6pm in Oklahoma City.
