SHREVEPORT - Texas Wesleyan University (21-14) faced a formidable challenge on Tuesday, taking on the No. 1-ranked LSU Shreveport (30-0). Despite a strong early effort, the Rams fell 15-2 at Pilot Field.
Texas Wesleyan took the first lead of the game in the third inning when
Mac Morelan delivered a solo home run to put the Rams ahead 1-0. The lead was short-lived, as LSU Shreveport responded in the fourth inning with three runs, highlighted by a triple from DJ Walker and a solo home run from Ian Montz.
The Pilots broke the game open in the fifth, plating 12 runs on a combination of timely hitting and patient at-bats. LSU Shreveport capitalized on walks and hit batters to extend their lead, with Jackson Syring's two-RBI triple serving as the exclamation point of the explosive inning.
The Rams continued to battle, adding a run in the sixth on a double from
Brendon Vela that brought home
Brandon Rincones. However, the deficit proved too great to overcome as the Pilots' bullpen held Texas Wesleyan scoreless the rest of the way.
Despite the loss, the Rams showed resilience against the nation's top team. Morelan's home run and Vela's RBI double were offensive highlights, while Rincones and
Ryan Flores also added hits.
David Theriot (4-5) took the loss after allowing three earned runs over four innings. The Rams used five pitchers in total, while LSU Shreveport's Calvin Shepherd (1-0) earned the win with four strong innings of work.
