POINT LOOKOUT – Texas Wesleyan University (17-8, 3-5 SAC) opened its series against College of the Ozarks (7-9) with a hard-fought battle but came up short in a 7-6 loss in Game One before bouncing back with a 5-2 victory in the second game of the doubleheader Friday at Bob Smith Field.
In the opener, the Rams jumped ahead early, as Brendon Vela launched a two-run home run in the first inning to give Texas Wesleyan a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats responded in the second, tying the game at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
The Rams reclaimed the lead in the third when Ryan Flores doubled to drive in Vela. They extended their advantage to 5-2 in the fourth after a run-scoring double from Brandon Rincones and an RBI groundout by Vela. Texas Wesleyan appeared in control heading into the sixth inning, but College of the Ozarks mounted a decisive rally.
The Bobcats erupted for five runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run homer from Charlie Parker that put them ahead 7-5. The Rams attempted a late comeback in the seventh, as Flores drove in Vela on an RBI single, but Texas Wesleyan could not overcome the deficit.
Despite the loss, Texas Wesleyan recorded eight hits, with Vela scoring three runs and collecting three RBIs. David Theriot (4-3) took the loss, allowing five runs over 5.1 innings.
In Game Two, Texas Wesleyan responded with a strong performance to secure its 17th win of the season. The Rams struck early, with Rincones launching a solo home run in the first inning. Later in the inning, Tahir Meulens added an RBI single to bring in Rody Garcia, giving Texas Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
The Rams extended their advantage in the second, capitalizing on a wild pitch that allowed Idelfonso Garcia to score. College of the Ozarks cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth, but Texas Wesleyan responded with runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.
Jorge Carvajal (2-1) delivered a dominant pitching performance, going the full seven innings while striking out 12 and allowing just five hits. Rincones finished 2-for-4 with a home run and a double to lead the Rams at the plate.
The Rams will close out their series against the Bobcats in Point Lookout on Saturday with, the first pitch scheduled for noon.
