FORT WORTH, TX – Texas Wesleyan University (17-11) defeated Nelson University (10-20) in a 3-1 series win with three straight victories. The Rams improve their conference record to 15-5, now in sole ownership of third place as the Sooner Athletic Conference race heats up.
In game one, the Rams' bats were on fire as they put together three consecutive multi run innings to go up big on the Lions. The first inning started off quick with
Jaelin Ornelas driving in
Haylie Delarosa to start off the scoring, soon after,
Kadynce Crenshaw drove a two RBI single into the outfield and brought in
Ashley Darilek and Ornelas. To end the first,
Ally Hinojosa scored on a wild pitch and
Devin Dunn drove in Crenshaw from third with a bloop single to increase their lead to five.
The second inning saw even more action as
Kylie Barnes started the party by crushing a three-run homer on the first pitch she saw. Hinojosa once again scored on a wild pitch and
Mattee Fry then joined the hit parade by driving in Crenshaw on an RBI single to the outfield. Delarosa helped increase the total with a sacrifice fly to right field, just a few batters later, Ornelas once again had an RBI single and the Rams brought one more across to end the second.
The Rams found themselves up 14-0 on the Lions, but they weren't done yet. Pinch hitter
Alyssa Bates drove in
EB Zimmerman to increase the lead once again, Darilek shortly after ripped an RBI double into the gap and finally Barnes again drove in two more with a two RBI single to end the third inning.
The Rams ended up crushing the Lions 18-0 in just five innings, the 18-run difference was the largest loss of the Lions season as well as the largest margin of victory for the Rams this season.
Pitcher
Abbie Bird was victorious after a stellar performance as she threw five innings and allowed just two hits as she struck out four. She hit double digit wins this season as she increased her record to 10-4. This marks the second time in her collegiate career that Bird has reached 10+ wins in a season in the circle.
In game two, the Rams and Lions remained neck and neck throughout the entire game until the bottom of the sixth.
The Rams struck first as Ornelas hit a towering shot over the wall for a two-run home run to get the Rams out front, her second home run on the season. The Lions didn't answer back until the top of the fourth with a line drive single to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of the Rams.
The Rams bats came to life again in the bottom of the sixth as they got started with an RBI single from Fry to bring in Ornelas, then pinch hitter
Katie Rodriguez came around to score on a wild pitch, and finally Delarosa ripped a double to the wall as the Rams scored two more to increase their lead to 6-1. The Rams then shut down the Lions chance of a comeback in the top of the seventh with a one two three inning.
Barnes got the win in the contest, increasing her win total to eight and season record to 8-6 on the year.
The Rams face off against Mid-America Christian this weekend for a top five conference matchup.
