FORT WORTH — Texas Wesleyan University (26-19, 10-13 SAC) and Southwestern Christian University (29-14, 14-10 SAC) split a Saturday doubleheader, with the Eagles taking Game One 7-4 before the Rams bounced back to win Game Two 7-3.
In the opener, Southwestern Christian used timely hitting and took advantage of Texas Wesleyan's defensive miscues to secure the victory. Matys Gagnon got the Eagles on the board with a two-run homer in the third, and Jhors Gomez later scored on a balk to give SCU a 3-0 lead. The Eagles added runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, three of which were unearned due to Ram errors.
Texas Wesleyan responded with a pair of runs in both the fourth and seventh innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from Brandon Vela. Despite outhitting the Eagles 6-5, the Rams' three errors and seven walks issued were costly. Frangely Morel earned the win for SCU with five solid innings, while Samuel Mendez took the loss.
The Rams rebounded in Game Two behind a strong outing from Jorge Carvajal, who threw a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out five. Texas Wesleyan jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings, then broke it open with Vela's three-run homer in the fourth — his second of the day.
Southwestern Christian's offense came from Gomez's RBI single in the first and a two-run homer by Dario Paredes in the fifth, but the Eagles couldn't overcome the early deficit. Elian Cuevas suffered the loss, allowing seven runs over four innings.
The series concluded the Rams' home schedule for the regular season, leaving one final road trip with a weekend matchup against the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma.
