BB: Science and Arts Storms Past Texas Wesleyan with Late-Inning Surge

CHICKASHA — Despite two early home runs and a solid start, Texas Wesleyan University (26-20, 10-14 SAC) could not hold off a late offensive onslaught from the University of Science and Arts (27-16,16-9 SAC), falling 11-4 at Bill Smith Ballpark on Thursday.

The Rams jumped ahead in the third inning with back-to-back home runs. Brendon Vela launched a two-run shot to left after Idelfonso Garcia's single, and Rody Garcia followed with a solo blast to give Texas Wesleyan a 3-0 lead.

Vela added another run in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch to make it 4-1. But that would be the last time the Rams would cross the plate.

Science and Arts began their rally with a solo homer by Christopher Martinez in the fourth, then chipped away with two more runs in the fifth. They broke it open in the seventh with four runs, highlighted by a two-run homer from Gunner Hansen and a solo shot from Payton McDowall. The Drovers added four more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Texas Wesleyan was held scoreless over the final four frames, managing just three hits during that span. Vela led the offense, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Rody Garcia and Dylan Masanda each added an extra-base hit.

On the mound, starter Noah Huerta allowed three runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings. David Theriot (4-6) took the loss, giving up four earned runs in 2.1 innings of relief.

Science and Arts racked up 15 hits, with Martinez driving in three and scoring twice. Jared Adams (4-4) earned the win in relief with two shutout innings.

The Rams close out the regular reason on Friday with a doubleheader against the Drovers, with game time at 1 and 3 p.m.
